Walkie vs Apple Dictation
Apple Dictation is free, private and already installed. The honest question is not which is better — it is whether what it leaves out is worth paying for.
The short answer
If you dictate a few sentences a day, keep Apple Dictation — it is free, private and already installed. Choose Walkie when you write long-form in many apps and want punctuation, filler-word removal, app-aware formatting and a dictionary that learns your vocabulary, plus meeting notes and Read Aloud the built-in does not have.

Why choose Walkie over Apple Dictation?
You stop saying "comma". Apple Dictation transcribes what you say, including the punctuation you say out loud and every 'um' on the way. Walkie punctuates for you, strips the fillers, and fixes the grammar — so what lands is what you meant, not a transcript of you talking.
It knows where you're typing. The same sentence should look different in Gmail, in Slack and in a terminal. Walkie formats for the app in front of you. Apple Dictation puts the same raw string everywhere.
It learns your words. Names, drug names, ticker symbols, your co-founder's surname, the internal codename nobody outside the company has heard. Walkie takes them into a custom dictionary and picks up more from the corrections you make. Apple's text replacements were not built for this.
Meetings and Read Aloud. The built-in has no meeting notes at all. Walkie records, transcribes and summarises them with speaker names, and lets you ask questions across them — 3 free to try before any of it costs anything.
When Apple Dictation is the better fit
It is free and it is already there. No download, no account, no subscription, nothing to evaluate. For short messages and search boxes, that is a genuinely hard offer to beat, and plenty of people never need more.
Deep system integration. It works in every text field on macOS and iOS including places a third-party app cannot reach, and it is covered by Apple's own privacy posture with no vendor to trust.
Nothing to keep working. No models to download or update, no signing in, no plan to remember. It survives OS upgrades because it is part of the OS.
The bottom line
If you dictate a few sentences a day into Messages and Notes, Apple Dictation is enough and you should keep the money. If you write for a living — long-form, in many apps, with vocabulary the machine has to be taught — the difference between a transcript and finished text is most of the work, and that is what you are buying.
Walkie vs Apple Dictation — common questions
Is Apple Dictation good enough?
For short, casual text it genuinely is — it is free, on-device and already installed. It falls down on long-form writing: you have to speak your punctuation, filler words come through verbatim, there is no grammar cleanup, no app-aware formatting, and no real custom vocabulary.
Is Walkie more private than Apple Dictation?
They are comparable when Walkie is in On-Device Mode — both transcribe on-device. Cloud Mode sends audio to the cloud for better formatting, under Zero Data Retention, and you choose per use which mode you are in.
Does Apple Dictation do meeting notes?
No. It is a dictation feature, not a notetaker. Walkie records and transcribes meetings with speaker labels, summaries and action items on macOS, with 3 meetings free to try.
